Zone 0 — Yomi Town (黄泉の街)
Yomi Town (黄泉の街) is the safe hub of Yomi no Sho. There is no combat here, no enemies, and no death. Every new character spawns here at level 1, and every player returns here between zone pushes to heal, sell loot, accept quests, and socialise. The town is the centre of the game’s social life — it’s where the local chat channel is most active, where friends meet, and where PvP challenges are most often issued.
What’s in town
Section titled “What’s in town”Three NPCs live in Yomi Town, all of whom you’ll interact with constantly:
| NPC | Role | Service |
|---|---|---|
| Kitsune Merchant | Merchant | Sells starter gear, buys your loot at 50% value |
| Shrine Maiden | Healer | Restores HP (2g/HP) and MP (5g/MP) |
| Ronin Ghost | Storyteller | Hands out the first quest in the chain |
There is no fourth NPC. The town is intentionally small — it’s a hub, not a destination. The game’s content is in the 8 combat zones outside the town.
Map discovery
Section titled “Map discovery”Every new character starts with only Yomi Town discovered. The other 8 zones appear on your map as ?? tiles until you either:
- Reach the level requirement for the zone (each zone has a
levelRangelike[1, 5]or[14, 22]). Once you reach the low end of the range, the zone is discovered. - Progress the quest chain to a point that explicitly discovers the zone (e.g. the “Into the Ashen Wastes” quest discovers zone 5).
You can travel to any discovered zone at any time, regardless of your current level. The game will warn you if you’re below the zone’s level range, but it won’t stop you. This is intentional — sometimes the optimal strategy is to farm a higher zone’s trash mobs for better loot, even if you can’t beat the boss.
The town’s role in the loop
Section titled “The town’s role in the loop”Yomi Town serves four purposes in the gameplay loop:
- Healing. The Shrine Maiden is the cheapest healer in the game (2g/HP, 5g/MP). Other healers exist in zones 7 and beyond, but they charge the same rates. Always heal in town when possible.
- Loot liquidation. The Kitsune Merchant is the only NPC who buys items. She pays 50% of item value — not great, but better than letting loot pile up in your inventory. Other merchants (in zone 5+) sell items but don’t buy them.
- Quest pickup. The Ronin Ghost hands out the first quest in the chain. Subsequent quests are picked up from NPCs in the combat zones, but you’ll often return to town to claim rewards or pick up follow-ups.
- Social. The town’s local chat channel is the most active in the game. Friends meet here, PvP challenges are issued here, and trade requests are most often initiated here.
Chat in town
Section titled “Chat in town”Yomi Town has its own local chat channel that’s free to use. The chat system has two channels:
- Local — visible only to players in the same zone. Free.
- Global — visible to all players everywhere. Costs 10 gold per message.
In town, the local channel is where most conversation happens. Use global only for important announcements (e.g. “Looking for PvP, level 20+ Samurai”) that you want everyone to see.
See Chat for full details on the chat system.
What to do in town
Section titled “What to do in town”A typical town visit looks like this:
- Heal at the Shrine Maiden. Top up HP and MP. Costs vary based on how much you’re missing.
- Sell loot at the Kitsune Merchant. Sort your inventory by rarity, sell anything that’s not an upgrade.
- Buy upgrades from the Kitsune Merchant. She sells a rotating stock of common-rarity starter gear (Rusty Katana, Bamboo Blade, Woven Robe, etc.).
- Check the leaderboard. The leaderboard is accessible from town — see how you rank against other players.
- Talk to the Ronin Ghost. He has new dialogue as you progress the quest chain.
- Travel to your next zone. Open the map, pick a zone, travel.
Travelling between zones
Section titled “Travelling between zones”Travel is free and instant. Open the map, click any discovered zone, and you’re there. There’s no fast-travel system, no travel cost, no travel time — you can bounce between zones as much as you like.
The only restriction is that you can only travel to discovered zones. Undiscovered zones appear as ?? tiles and are not clickable.
What to do if you’re stuck
Section titled “What to do if you’re stuck”If you’re stuck — can’t beat a boss, can’t afford gear, can’t find a quest — Yomi Town is where you regroup. Specifically:
- If you can’t beat a boss: Drop back to a lower zone and grind. Buy better gear from the Kitsune Merchant. Allocate your stat points differently. See Progression for advice.
- If you can’t afford gear: Grind a lower zone for gold. Sell loot you don’t need. See Items for drop rates.
- If you can’t find a quest: Talk to every NPC in town. Check the Quests page for the chain structure. Some quests require you to be in a specific zone to accept them.
