Ronin Ghost (浪人亡霊)

The Ronin Ghost (浪人亡霊) is a storyteller NPC in Yomi Town. He doesn’t sell anything, doesn’t heal, and doesn’t offer combat services — but he gives you the first quest in the game’s 7-quest chain, and his dialogue is the primary source of early-game lore. Talk to him every time you return to town, because his dialogue changes as you progress the chain.

  • Gives the first quest: “Whispers of Yomi” — talk to the Bamboo Watchman in zone 1. Reward: 50 gold.
  • Shares lore about Yomi, the darkening, and the old gods.
  • Does not sell, buy, or heal.

When you talk to the Ronin Ghost for the first time, he offers the quest “Whispers of Yomi” (黄泉の囁き):

“The Ronin Ghost’s tale weighs heavy. Seek the Bamboo Watchman in the Withered Bamboo Grove and speak with him — the grove holds the first thread of Yomi’s darkening.”

To complete this quest:

  1. Accept the quest from the Ronin Ghost.
  2. Travel to zone 1 (Withered Bamboo Grove).
  3. Talk to the Bamboo Watchman.
  4. Return to the Ronin Ghost and claim your 50 gold reward.

This unlocks the next quest in the chain, “Kodama Purge” (kill 5 enemies in zone 1), which is offered by the Bamboo Watchman. The full chain is documented on the Quests page.

The Ronin Ghost’s opening line varies based on your progress in the quest chain. The first time you talk to him:

“You wear the look of one freshly arrived. The river’s chill still clings to your sleeves. Sit — I have a tale that may spare you a death or two.”

Options:

  • “Tell me your story” → continues to the_dark.
  • “Any advice for a newcomer?” → continues to wisdom.
  • “I must be going” → “Go, then. The dead have time. The living… less so.” (ends conversation)

“I was a samurai, once. Lordless, but alive. I walked the bamboo groves when they were still green, and the mist had not yet claimed the shrine. Then the darkening came — slow at first, then all at once. I died in the grove, my sword unbloodied. Now I wander here, telling the same tale to fresh faces who will, in time, become old faces.”

Options:

  • “What was the darkening?” → “Some say it was Izanami’s grief, finally overflowing. Others say it was Kagutsuchi’s fire, burning too bright. I say it was both, and neither. The old gods are diminished, but they still move — and their movements darken the world.” (returns to greet)
  • “Continue” → “Enough of me. The Bamboo Watchman in the grove — he was my friend, in life. Speak with him, if you would. He has a task that needs a living hand.” (advances the “Whispers of Yomi” quest)

“Three rules, traveler. First: do not fight a boss you cannot survive. Second: do not spend gold you cannot afford to lose. Third: do not trust the kitsune, even when she is honest. Especially then.”

Options:

  • “Thank you” → “Spare me the thanks. Survive, instead. The dead have no use for gratitude.” (ends conversation)

After you complete “Whispers of Yomi” and progress further in the chain, the Ronin Ghost’s dialogue updates to reflect the current state of the world. He comments on:

  • After “Kodama Purge”: “The grove breathes easier, with the Bakemono thinned. You have done well — better than I did, in life.”
  • After “Crimson Cleansing”: “The torii stands cleaner now. The Tengu will not forget, but they will pause. That is enough.”
  • After “Ash Revenant Hunt”: “The Ash Wanderer speaks well of you. Few earn her respect — fewer still keep it.”
  • After “Throne of Fire”: “You have walked further than I ever did. The throne is quiet, and the fire burns clean. Perhaps… perhaps Yomi can be mended, after all.”

The Ronin Ghost is the game’s primary lore NPC. Through his dialogue, you learn:

  • The world was once lighter — “the bamboo groves were green, and the mist had not yet claimed the shrine.”
  • A “darkening” occurred, which he attributes to the diminished old gods (Izanami, Kagutsuchi).
  • He was a samurai who died in the Withered Bamboo Grove before it withered.
  • The Bamboo Watchman was his friend in life.

This lore is expanded by other NPCs (particularly the Flame Priest in zone 7), but the Ronin Ghost is where it starts.

  • Quests — the full 7-quest chain, starting with his “Whispers of Yomi”.
  • Bamboo Watchman — the NPC he sends you to.
  • Yomi Town — the zone he lives in.
