Onmyoji (陰陽師)

import { Card, Steps, Table } from ‘@astrojs/starlight/components’;

The Onmyoji is the game’s primary magic damage class. Where the Samurai hits once for massive damage, the Onmyoji hits 4 times for moderate damage — and against low-DEF enemies, that 4-hit barrage adds up faster than a single nuke. The Onmyoji’s defining feature is its enormous MP pool (70 base, 9 per level), which lets it cast skills far more freely than any other class. The trade-off: the lowest HP in the game and middling DEF, making it the most fragile class at low levels.

This page covers the Onmyoji’s base stats, growth, skill tree, stat allocation, and recommended playstyle.

StatValueNotes
HP90Lowest in the game.
MP70Highest in the game by far.
ATK10Below average.
DEF5Below average.
SPD10Standard.
Crit5%Standard.

The Onmyoji’s stat profile is “glass cannon caster” — enormous MP, low everything else. This is a high-risk, high-reward class: your skills are devastating, but a single boss crit can end you.

The Onmyoji’s HP growth is the slowest in the game, which means the class never becomes tanky. A level 50 Onmyoji has 580 HP — less than a level 10 Sohei (340 HP). This forces a specific playstyle: kill the enemy before it can kill you.

StatBonus per pointRecommended for Onmyoji
STR+2 ATK★★★ — surprisingly good
AGI+1 SPD, +0.5% crit★★ — situational
INT+3 max MP, +1 ATK★★★★★ — your primary stat
VIT+10 max HP, +1 DEF★★★★ — necessary for survival
  • Levels 1–10: 3 INT / 2 VIT per level. You need MP for skills and HP to survive the early zones.
  • Levels 10–30: 4 INT / 1 VIT per level. By now you have enough HP to survive one crit, and your MP pool is large enough to skill-spam.
  • Levels 30+: 5 INT per level. Pure damage.

An alternative build that some players prefer is 2 INT / 2 VIT / 1 STR early, which trades some MP for better basic attacks (useful when MP runs out) and more HP. This is safer but slower — try it if you’re dying a lot.

Shikigami Barrage (式神弾幕) — MP cost 14, cooldown 3 turns, type: attack, 4 hits.

Four paper spirits strike for 100% ATK each (total 400% if all hit).

Shikigami Barrage is the Onmyoji’s signature skill and the reason the class exists. Four hits at 100% ATK each is theoretically the highest single-target damage in the game — but each hit rolls independently for crit and dodge, which means the actual damage varies wildly. Against a low-DEF enemy, you’ll see massive numbers. Against a high-DEF enemy (where each hit is reduced to single digits), you’ll see pathetic numbers.

The 14 MP cost is significant. With a base MP pool of 70, you can cast Shikigami Barrage 5 times before running dry. That’s plenty for most fights, but in long boss fights you’ll run out.

Ofuda Seal (札封) — MP cost 10, cooldown 3 turns, type: attack.

Slap a paper talisman that detonates for 180% ATK magic damage.

Ofuda Seal is the Onmyoji’s single-hit nuke. Use it against high-DEF enemies where Shikigami Barrage’s per-hit damage is too low. The 180% multiplier is higher than any other non-signature attack skill in the game, making it a strong fallback.

Spirit Seal (霊封) — MP cost 16, cooldown 5 turns, type: attack.

Bind and immolate a spirit for 260% ATK magic damage.

Spirit Seal is the Onmyoji’s “ultimate” — a massive single-target nuke on a long cooldown. It’s the strongest single-hit attack skill in the game by raw multiplier, edging out the Samurai’s Iaido Strike (240%). Use it on bosses.

  • Power Strike (level 1) — 6 MP, 160% ATK. A decent filler when your class skills are on cooldown.
  • Meditation (level 5) — 10 MP, heals 30% max HP. With the Onmyoji’s low HP pool, this heal is small in absolute terms (~27 HP at level 1) but can save your life against a boss.
  • Focus Guard (level 10) — does nothing currently. Skip.

At level 10+, your enabled-skills list should be:

  1. Spirit Seal (highest single-hit damage, save for bosses)
  2. Shikigami Barrage (highest sustained damage, save for low-DEF enemies)
  3. Ofuda Seal (fallback single-hit nuke)
  4. Power Strike (MP-cheap filler)
  5. Meditation (panic heal)

The auto-combat AI will fire Spirit Seal on cooldown if it’s first in the list, which wastes it on trash mobs. Consider manually disabling Spirit Seal when fighting trash, and re-enabling it for bosses.

The Onmyoji is the most actively-managed class in the game, despite the auto-combat system. You need to:

  • Match your skill to the enemy. Use Shikigami Barrage on low-DEF enemies (zones 1, 2, 3 trash), Ofuda Seal on high-DEF enemies (zones 4+ trash, all bosses), and Spirit Seal on bosses.
  • Watch your MP. Your MP pool is large but not infinite. A long fight (5+ rounds) can drain it, leaving you with basic attacks. Retreat to town before that happens.
  • Don’t get hit. Your HP is low enough that a single boss crit (which is +50% damage) can one-shot you. The Onibi in zone 2 (16 base ATK, 8% crit) is particularly dangerous — at stage 5+, a crit can do 30+ damage, which is a third of your HP at level 5.
  • Invest in DEF gear early. A Monk’s Cassock (+8 DEF, +40 HP) is more valuable for an Onmyoji than a similarly-priced weapon upgrade. You’ll out-damage most enemies anyway; surviving is the issue.
  • Low-DEF enemies (Kodama, Onibi, Gaki): Shikigami Barrage shreds them.
  • Single-target fights: your burst damage is unmatched.
  • Bosses with predictable patterns: Spirit Seal + Shikigami Barrage combos can melt bosses.
  • High-DEF enemies (Kappa, Hyakki, Yomotsu-shikome): Shikigami Barrage’s per-hit damage is too low. Switch to Ofuda Seal.
  • Fast enemies that outspeed you (Onibi, Shiranui): they hit first, and your low HP can’t take the hit.
  • Long fights: your MP runs out, and your basic attack (10 base ATK) is pitiful.
  • Primary stat: INT
  • Secondary stat: VIT (early), then pure INT
  • Required skills: Shikigami Barrage (always), Ofuda Seal (high-DEF enemies)
  • Optional skills: Spirit Seal (bosses), Meditation (panic)
  • Gear priority: MP > HP > ATK > DEF > Crit
  • Weakness: Low HP, vulnerable to crits, MP-dependent, struggles against high-DEF enemies
  • Strength: Highest sustained damage in the game, massive MP pool, excellent against low-DEF enemies
