Kitsune Merchant (狐商人)

The Kitsune Merchant (狐商人) is the merchant of Yomi Town. She’s a fox-masked trader whose wares “appear from nowhere” and whose grin is “far too knowing.” She’s the first NPC you’ll interact with, and the one you’ll return to most often — she’s the only merchant in the game who both sells and buys items, until you reach the Ash Wanderer in zone 5.

  • Sells a fixed inventory of common-rarity starter gear. Prices range from 20 to 65 gold.
  • Buys any item in your inventory at 50% of its value (the buybackRatio is 0.5, fixed).
  • Does not heal. For healing, see the Shrine Maiden.
  • Does not offer quests. For the first quest, see the Ronin Ghost.

These are all common-rarity items with minZone: 1 — they’re the same items that drop in zone 1. The Kitsune Merchant’s shop is essentially a way to buy specific starter gear you didn’t get as a drop, at a slight markup vs. the item’s value (e.g. Bamboo Blade has value: 50 but the merchant sells it for 65g — a 30% markup).

The Kitsune Merchant buys items at 50% of their value (not their shop price). So:

  • A Bamboo Blade (value 50g) sells for 25g.
  • A Woven Robe (value 30g) sells for 15g.
  • A Muramasa Blade (value 1600g) sells for 800g.

The 50% ratio is fixed across all merchants in the game. There is no haggling, no reputation system, no way to improve the ratio. When you’re deciding whether to equip or sell an item, the rule of thumb is: equip if the item is an upgrade over your current piece in that slot, otherwise sell.

The Kitsune Merchant has three dialogue nodes, with branching options.

“Ah, a fresh face drifting into Yomi Town. Coin jingles in your purse — I can hear it. Care to browse my wares, traveler?”

Options:

  • “Show me your wares” → opens the shop, then continues to wares_pitch.
  • “What lies beyond the town?” → “Eight roads spiral outward through the dark. Bamboo first, then mist-shrine, then the crimson torii. Stronger yokai the further you stray.” → continues to warnings.
  • “Maybe later” → “Hmph. The fox will be here when the lanterns dim. Go on, then.” (ends conversation)

“All sales final. The Onibi Lantern is popular with the shinobi — crit and atk in one package. The Kitsune Charm, well… that one bites back if you owe me a favor.”

(Note: the Onibi Lantern and Kitsune Charm are not actually in her shop inventory — they’re items she references in dialogue but doesn’t sell. They drop in zones 4 and 2 respectively.)

Options:

  • “Do you buy items?” → “I’ll take your loot off your hands — half its worth. A fair cut for the convenience. Better than letting it rust in your pack.”
  • “Anything else?” → “The roads wait. Or the shrine maiden does, if your wounds bleed too freely.” (returns to greet)

“Don’t wander into zones above your strength. The Kodama look gentle, but the Yomotsu-shikome? They feast on the arrogant.”

Options:

  • “Thank you” → “Spare me the manners. Spend coin, survive the dark. That is the way of Yomi.” (ends conversation)

Visit the Kitsune Merchant:

  • After every zone push. Sell loot you don’t need, buy upgrades if you can afford them.
  • Before logging off. A full inventory means discarded drops while idling. Sell before you log off.
  • When you need a specific starter piece. If you’re level 5 and still missing a weapon, just buy one from her rather than hoping for a drop.
  • Ash Wanderer — the other merchant, in zone 5.
  • Items Index — the full list of items, including those she doesn’t sell.
  • Yomi Town — the zone she lives in.
