Pantheon
The pantheon of Yomi no Sho consists of eight gods, each associated with a domain of death, memory, or persistence. They are not worshipped in the conventional sense — they are acknowledged, propitiated, and occasionally bargained with. The pantheon’s influence on gameplay is concentrated in the Hollow Shrine, where lanterns dedicated to each god grant rotating blessings, but the lore extends throughout the game.
This page describes each god, their domain, their relationships with the others, and the blessing their lantern grants.
The structure of the pantheon
Section titled “The structure of the pantheon”The eight gods are not equal. They are organised into three tiers:
- The Three Sovereigns — the oldest and most powerful gods, who predate Yomi itself.
- The Four Wardens — gods appointed by the Sovereigns to govern specific realms of Yomi.
- The Scribe — a singular figure who serves as the pantheon’s recorder and the player’s primary NPC contact.
The Sovereigns are remote. They do not appear in gameplay and are referenced only in lore. The Wardens are the gods whose lanterns appear in the Hollow Shrine, and they are the ones whose blessings the player can receive. The Scribe is a special case — he is technically a god but functions as an NPC.
The Three Sovereigns
Section titled “The Three Sovereigns”Izanami-no-Mikoto
Section titled “Izanami-no-Mikoto”The Lady of the Dead, the first soul to enter Yomi and the one whose presence made Yomi habitable for the souls that followed. Izanami is the Sovereign of Persistence; her domain is the metaphysical law that the dead continue to exist after death. Without her, Yomi would be empty.
Izanami does not appear in gameplay. Her name is invoked in the game’s opening cinematic — “by the grace of Izanami, you persist” — and her presence is felt throughout the lore, but she is silent and unseen. The community speculates that she is the figure glimpsed in the distance during the Sunless Throne encounter, but this has not been confirmed by the developers.
Izanagi-no-Mikoto
Section titled “Izanagi-no-Mikoto”The Lord of the Living, Izanami’s consort, who attempted to retrieve her from Yomi and was driven back by the sight of her decayed form. Izanagi is the Sovereign of Separation; his domain is the boundary between the living world and Yomi. He is the god who closed the path between the worlds, and the god whose decree the player character violates by entering Yomi while still alive.
Izanagi’s relationship with the player character is adversarial in the lore but mechanically invisible. He does not appear as a boss; he does not directly interfere with the player’s progress. The community interprets this as Izanagi having chosen to tolerate the Warders as a necessary evil, since the alternative — the slow dissolution of all souls in Yomi — would also dissolve the boundary he is sworn to maintain.
Kotoamatsukami
Section titled “Kotoamatsukami”The Three Hidden Gods, the original creators of the world and the predecessors of the Sovereigns. Kotoamatsukami is not a single god but a collective name for three beings whose individual names are not recorded. They are mentioned in passing in item descriptions and referenced obliquely in the Sunless Throne lore, but they do not appear in the game and their nature is one of the great mysteries of the setting.
The community theory, supported by scattered lore fragments, is that Kotoamatsukami created Yomi as a prison for something older than themselves, and that the Unmade are that something’s remnants. This theory is unconfirmed and may be addressed in future content updates.
The Four Wardens
Section titled “The Four Wardens”Enma, Warden of Judgment
Section titled “Enma, Warden of Judgment”Enma is the Warden of the Hollow Shrine and the god of judgment. His domain is the assessment of souls — the determination of whether a soul’s persistence is justified by their living actions. In practice, Enma’s judgment is what determines which realm of Yomi a soul is sent to, and his lantern in the Shrine grants a blessing of Clear Sight, which increases the drop rate of Binding Slips for 6 hours.
Enma is the god who appoints the Scribe and, by extension, who authorises the player character’s role as a Warder. The opening cinematic’s “bargain” is, in lore terms, an Enma-sanctioned exception to the rule that the living cannot enter Yomi. This makes Enma the god most directly responsible for the player’s situation, and his motivations are a recurring source of lore speculation.
Sanzu-no-Onna, Warden of the Crossing
Section titled “Sanzu-no-Onna, Warden of the Crossing”Sanzu-no-Onna is the Warden of the Banks of Sanzu and the goddess of the crossing. Her domain is the transition between life and death — the moment of crossing, the payment of the toll, the arrival in Yomi. She is the Ferryman in the game’s UI, though the lore is clear that she is far more than a mere boat operator. Her lantern in the Shrine grants a blessing of Safe Passage, which reduces the rate of diminution for all Shades for 6 hours.
Sanzu-no-Onna is the only Warden the player character meets in person, at the end of the main story quest. The meeting is brief and cryptic; she does not explain herself, and the player character does not ask. The community has interpreted this scene in many ways, but the consensus is that she is testing the player’s resolve rather than conveying information.
Kagutsuchi, Warden of the Mount
Section titled “Kagutsuchi, Warden of the Mount”Kagutsuchi is the Warden of Mount Kagura and the god of fire and celebration. His domain is the paradox of joy in death — the recognition that some deaths are not tragedies but completions. He is the most active of the Wardens in the game’s present-day plot, appearing in several quest chains as a guide and occasional combatant. His lantern in the Shrine grants a blessing of Ember Joy, which increases XP gain for 6 hours.
Kagutsuchi is a fan-favourite character. His dialogue is the warmest in the game, his design is striking (a tall figure wreathed in controlled flame, dancing even when standing still), and his lore is among the most fully developed. The community has produced extensive fan art and writing about him, some of which the developers have acknowledged as canon-adjacent.
Suijin, Warden of the Marsh
Section titled “Suijin, Warden of the Marsh”Suijin is the Warden of the Drowning Marsh and the goddess of water and memory. Her domain is the preservation of memory through water — the tears of the mourners, the rain on a funeral, the river that carries a soul away. She is the most aloof of the Wardens, rarely appearing in quests and never speaking directly to the player. Her lantern in the Shrine grants a blessing of Still Water, which increases the drop rate of Ascension materials for 6 hours.
Suijin’s relationship with the other Wardens is tense. She and Kagutsuchi are opposed by nature — water and fire — and their disagreements are a recurring source of lore friction. The community speculates that the Drowning Marsh’s existence as a realm is partly Suijin’s protest against Kagutsuchi’s influence, though this is not confirmed in the text.
The Scribe
Section titled “The Scribe”The Scribe is the recorder of the pantheon and the keeper of the Yomi no Sho. He is technically a god — the youngest of the pantheon, appointed by Enma after the original Scribe was Unmade in a catastrophe the lore refers to only as “the Loss” — but he functions primarily as an NPC, providing the player with quest direction and lore exposition.
The Scribe’s role is to maintain the Book: to write the names of the dead, to speak them aloud, and to ensure that the Warder’s summoning contracts are recorded. He is the figure who offers the player character the bargain in the opening cinematic, and he is the figure who explains the game’s core mechanics throughout the tutorial. He is also, in the late game, the source of the quest chain that unlocks the Sunless Throne.
The Scribe’s motivations are ambiguous. He is helpful, even kind, but the community has noted that his explanations are always partial — he tells the player what they need to know to proceed, but never more. Several late-game lore drops suggest that he is working toward a goal that the player character does not yet understand, and that the player’s role in that goal may not be entirely voluntary.
The blessing cycle
Section titled “The blessing cycle”The four Warden lanterns in the Hollow Shrine rotate on a 6-hour cycle. At any given time, exactly one lantern is lit and granting its blessing. The cycle order is:
- Enma (Clear Sight — Binding Slip drop rate +20%)
- Kagutsuchi (Ember Joy — XP gain +30%)
- Suijin (Still Water — Ascension material drop rate +25%)
- Sanzu-no-Onna (Safe Passage — Diminution rate −50%)
The cycle repeats continuously and is synced to the server clock, not the player’s local time. The community maintains a blessing-timing tracker (linked in the Reference section) so players can plan their farming sessions around the most relevant blessing.
